Comfy, smiling little boys

Good morning to all of our friends. Hope all is well. The boys were having a good night tonight. Brady kept the nurses on their toes by making them put him on his belly. Patrick is keeping the doctors on their toes by keeping down his feedings, and making them consider putting him on a CPAP too. It should be an interesting week.

Brady
Brady is holding steady today. We were happier tonight because he didn't look as pale today. They s=might have to give him blood soon, they are not sure. They are going to see what his blood levels are and go from there. I will let everyone know if we need donations, but if we do, don't do it until you talk to one of us. They misplaced another bag of donor blood, so Craig is going to call and figure out what is happening. His monitor was up and down tonight. He saturation level goes up and down depending on if he is moving, or how he is laying. It is very stressful. He seemed to be in a good mood tonight though, because he smiled for us a lot. I did get it on video, and also some cute pics. He weighed 2 lbs 4 oz. we think. He did well during his hands on. The nurse had to suction his nose and mouth, so we did hear him cry a little. We found out yesterday that he had a little bit of eye discharge in one eye. They did a culture and it came back positive for an infection. They might start him on eye drops.  Otherwise, he seems to be hanging in there.
                                                                      Say cheese!
                                                                           I see you!
                                                                        Smile big for us Brady!
Patrick
There has been a lot of talk about what to do with Patrick's vent. Some doctors like it, some like the vent that Brady is on. Some doctor's say switch him to the other vent, some say keep him on the oscillator, some say CPAP. We have no idea what is going to happen with him. We might come in one day this week, and he might be extubated. Who knows at this point. They have decided to start him on a food cri like Brady. We will see how he handles it. No poop since yesterday, but they are not worried, his belly is soft. He seemed very lazy today, haha. He likes a full belly. He weighed 2 lbs 4 oz,  also, and he measured at 13 1/2 inches I think, but we can't remember, we are tired, haha. Otherwise, he seems comfortable, and was sleeping as soon as he hit his belly. They both had Pacifiers in their mouths when we left. Both were nice and cozy.
                                                                   Hi everyone!
                                                                    Got my paci again
                                                                   Night night Patrick

Good night all!

Be prepared, we might need your blood.

Hello all. How is everyone doing tonight? I hope all is well. Tonight was a good night, but stressful for me. I do not like the monitors and the sassy tones that come with them. I know that they are there to alert the nurses of issues. I appreciate that, I do. I use them at work, and they don't annoy me there because I know they are doing the job that they were made to do. In the NICU setting though, me no likey. They start going off, then they are flashing yellow, then both of the boys monitors go off, then they turn red, and then it gets hot.  Then mommy gets antsy. Tonight the monitors were going off a lot, and they boys like to "talk" to each other, and start them at the same time. I am pretty sure that this is a glimpse into the future. Double trouble.

Brady
Brady is doing okay tonight. So we are clear, we still hate the CPAP. We still dislike the indents in his face, and the new indent in his forehead. We still dislike that his heart rate drops, and that the monitors flash an angry red.  It makes me all....Grrrr inside. Tonight he had a little swollen foot, and we don't know why, but it started to go down before we left. He looked a little pale tonight. His heart rate was very high tonight also, which makes his monitors angry. He might need more blood, which sometimes makes his right rate high like that. We will let everyone know.  Craig actually just called to check on some blood as I am typing. Brady's fave nurse is there tonight. She said that he took a poop, so his belly looks smaller. Also she placed a tube into his belly to help get rid of extra air that is pushed in by his CPAP. She said after that, and his poop,  his belly measured 2 inches smaller. She also said that she placed him on his belly, and now his heart rate is stabilizing and he is doing well. This kid loves his little belly. He made me a little nervous leaving him tonight, but I feel better now. His weight was 2 lb 4 oz. He is still on his formula, and loving it. He has labs at 2 am, hopefully all is well.
                                                                      Sleeping on my side.
Taking a break from my CPAP
Patrick
Patrick is doing okay too. He is still getting his 1 ml of milk. Soon he will start on a cri like Brady if he handles it well.  His oxygen was at 24% tonight which is good. No poop tonight, but he pooped yesterday which is fine. His belly is still soft. They might switch to the same vent as Brady, but they are still deciding. He was 2 lbs 2 oz. today. I don't have a lot to say about him today which is a great thing. He seems nice and snugly, which we like.
                                                                    Love it
                                                                              Getting my food via syringe
                                                                              Sleeping soundly, thankfully.

Here is a special treat. I know that a lot of you have been looking for traits of me in the boys. As much as I would love for them to have a little bit of me in them, I have to say it's not happening.  Here is a picture of Craig when he was a baby. He tries to say that I had an affair, and that is why they don't have our blood type, but as you can see, they are alllll him!
Look at that and tell me he is not the father! Bahahahhahaha!

Have a great day all!

Milk for Patrick, and Brady's for Brady

Good morning to everyone. Today we call with some good things and some bad things. They weren't horrible, they were things that were expected, but annoying just the same.

Patrick
Patrick started on milk today! Yea buddy! His nurse said the surgeon came and checked on him today, and decided that his stomach looked okay. They started him on milk at 1 ml every three hours. He has had thee feedings so far. Hopefully he is handling it well, and digesting. He did poop today and tonight, so looks like it is moving through, which is awesome. He still looks more comfortable at this time. He did chew on his Paci a little bit tonight.  He was 2 lbs 2 oz, but we are not sure if he is more. The scale was being touchy tonight.

                                                                                Sleeping well tonight
I am signing him up for a headache commercial I swear
                                                                          Paci time

Brady
Brady is doing okay on his CPAP. They did say that he had three episodes of bradycardia, where his heart rate drops. On occasion he stops breathing, so they have to wiggle him to stimulate him. Scary right. This is common for them at first, because they aren't supposed to be breathing on their own yet. The fact that he is doing it is great. He did it once or twice tonight, but managed to get himself out of it. They did say that once they had to bag him (give him a few breaths with the ambu bag) once.  Sigh, poor kid, he is trying so hard. Like I said though, this is something that happens, and they said he is doing well with it otherwise. His face is all pushed in everywhere because of the tape and straps, but we are dealing with it. It sucks, but he is moving in a good direction, so it is what it is. He was 2lb 6 oz.
Getting his flow by oxygen while changing
Big stretch! See how the straps indent his face?
I'll hold this on my face, I know it's important!

I don't know if the surgeon will check on Patrick tomorrow because it is Sunday, but they might. We might call tonight just to check on Brady again, but unless we hear something, we will hope and pray he is good. His fave nurse is back tomorrow, so he will be excited!
have a great day everyone. It's 2 am, off to pump, and then sleep!

Cpaps and poop

Good evening all. Today was an exciting day. So exciting, in fact, that I am waiting for the horrific roller coaster drop of hell to occur again. I guess when you are up, you are up, so we will take it. Today we received a text message from our Brady. It said the following;
"Hi mommy and daddy! It's Brady! I just got extubated! No tube down my throat! :)  He also sent a picture of himself.
It was so exciting, because not only was he on a CPAP, which is awesome, but also he learned how to text overnight. Can we say Scholarship!? Haha, no seriously, this is awesome. We did not expect this so early. Last night they turned down his vent settings to 15. They pulled blood gasses this morning, and they were good, so they took out his tube. He is breathing on his own, and he seems to be doing well. He did have some lower oxygen saturation early today, but seemed to be better though out the day. They said that sometimes they do really well, and they can stay on this for awhile. They also said that sometimes, because they become so tired breathing on their own, that they have to be reintubated. Sometimes they can go a few days but, it is hard for them, so don't be shocked if it happens. They also say that because they are working so hard, they burn a lot of calories, so don't be surprised if his weight goes down. Here is something that is scary. We went from changing diapers with a tube in his mouth, to diapers with not even a mask on. That's right, when you change things now, and clean faces, the mask comes off, and they just get flow by O2.  So scary, but because of this, I was able to get pictures of his face with nothing on it. That was kind of cool. I miss looking at his little nose already! He was 2 lbs 4 oz tonight.
                                                                             My little old man
                                                                             Only have a feeding tube!
Waving goodbye, see you in the morning

Patrick
Our little Patrick had a good day too! It's about time right? Little Patrick pooped again today, yea!! Te surgeon checked him out today, and decided to hold off on the barium, and start feeding. He is getting Pedialyte every 3 hours. He gets 1 ml. So far, he has had two feedings, and he is holding them down. They pulled back on the tube in his stomach to see if there was any backup, but it was clear. I am still keeping my fingers crossed. I will be so happy for him if this goes well! He was 2 lbs 4 oz also tonight. He measured 13 inches. He was 11 1/4 when he was born. Growing a little inch by inch! He seems much more comfortable at this time, even off of his Fentanyl. he was sucking a lot today, so Craig gave him his Paci, and he liked it!
                                                                         I like my Paci!
                                                                       Signature dramatic pose
Look who has a mohawk now!
                                                                              Sleepy little guy

That's the news tonight. We are hoping we can stay at the top of the coaster for a little bit. Praying hard daily, and keeping our fingers crossed! Now, for those of you that were disappointed that I did not provide pics of Patrick's first poop on last nights blog, please let me explain. Yes, I did get a picture of it. No, I did not think that you all wanted to see it while having breakfast and your morning coffee.  So, here is the deal. For those of you that want to see it, I have posted it below our sign off. For those of you that do not want to see it, I suggest you stop reading after my sign off. Here we go, make your decision now!

Good night!
Em, Craig and the boys!

                                                       Patrick's first poop!!! Yea!!!!
I can't believe you all looked at his poop, you guys are so gross! Hahahahhahaha!
Love you all

Everyone poops!

Hello to all! Okay I have exciting news tonight. I know that this may not be exciting for anyone out there, and also it will probably make most of you gag, but we are over the moon excited. Are you ready? Okay, on three. 1.2.

PATRICK POOPED!!!!!!!! (and the crowd goes wild!!!!!)
Okay okay, everyone calm down, pull yourselves together, geez. Why are we so excited??!! Here is why. For weeks now, we have been waiting for his intestines to do something...anything. I had asked his nurse a few nights back if maybe he had some lodged up poop in his belly, and that is why the gas was hanging out in there. She said there could be, and she was going to ask if they could do a little enema or something to help. The doctor last night put an x-ray on the orders today, which he had done. It still showed some gas in there. When we got there, we ran onto the doctor in the hallway and he said that they were probably going to do some sort of barium study.  Once we got in there, after doing Brady's hands on, Craig went to work on Patrick. He said that he was changing his diaper, and he moved him to get his little back end, and he saw some poop pop out. When he put him down it went back in. He picked him up again and out it popped again. Of course, it got stuck, probably because it had been there for like a month! Craig had to assist it out, ewww, but awwwe, what a good daddy! The doctor came over to do rounds, and said "We have to come up with a plan for the barium study, since they need to take multiple x-rays, and he can't go to them, they have to come up here." Patrick's nurse and Craig said, wait we have good news! They showed him the diaper, and the doctor said "Eeewwww, I don't want to see that! I just ate!!!!" Then started laughing.  Craig said, but we are so excited!!! All the nurses in rounds started laughing. So, the doctor said, okay, lets change the orders and take a follow up x-ray in the morning. If the whole intestine is more gas, and it looks better, then maybe they can start some Pedialyte. Little Patrick may have saved himself a barium study.  He also said that he looked at the head ultrasound. He said he wasn't that impressed with it, meaning. He said he could see the spots that they were talking about, and they are very small. He said to not be so worried just yet. We will recheck the MRI before he leaves, and do a follow up scan in a few weeks. Could things be turning around for our little man? I pray that it is. I never once thought that I would be praying to god, and thanking him for a poop nugget. People are going to pray tonight and ask for money, happiness, or love. I am going to pray for more poop.  I have no shame in saying it either. Please lord, bless our family with poop, bring on the shit storm. He was 2lb 2 oz tonight. They are lowering his vent settings. He is still off of the Fentanyl.
                                                                                          Love this little tushy.
                                                                                          I just pooped!

Brady
Whats happening with Brady? BRADY POOPED!!!!!! Hahaha. I know, I know he has already done this. It was my night to change his diaper though, and it was loaded! I mean it was on the blankets, on his back, on his legs, and on his toe toes!  I opened it up, and my husband started to laugh, then gag, then walked away to tend to Patrick. Little did he know what Patrick had in store too. Haha, sucker! After we changed his blankets, his diaper, and then washed him down from back to toes, he looked good.  His weight was still 2 lbs 4 oz. He is still getting his 6.3 ml feeds. They were going to lower his vent settings tomorrow if they felt good about his gasses. His nurse brushed his little hair after flipping his to his belly. You know the story after that. Belly=good night of sleep.
I love this little tushy too!
                                                                           Still rocking the hawk hair.

Alright, I am actually going to get to sleep early tonight!  Let's all cross our fingers for a good x-ray tomorrow. If if turns out well, lets cross our fingers for some food, and for it to digest! I know it's a lot of fingers crossed, but he needs a good thing in his life so bad!!
Love you all!
Em and Craig, and the poop twins!

Potential positives

Good morning, or evening, depending on how many are still catching up from last night. I know I kept you all waiting, so let's get down to it right away.

Patrick
Little Patrick is off of his Fentanyl. That's right, off the Fentanyl. Does everyone remember what happened last time he was low on that drug? He had ants in his diaper, and was super annoyed, right? Not this time. We were thinking back on the last time he was lowered, and we realized it was right before he started getting the infection, so that's probably why he was so annoyed. Tonight, I walked up to his bed, and said hello. He opened his eyes slowly, and looked at me, the best that he could, and gave me a little wake up stretch. He didn't seem jumpy, or like he was over stimulated. He seemed nice and calm. This is great. They did follow up x-rays again on his chest and abdomen. The chest looks a little hazy again, but they said that can be a side effect from the machine. It also could be because of the undeveloped lungs. They are going to start him on some respiratory drugs to see if it helps. The belly still showed some gas in the colon. We were thinking, as were some of the nurses, that maybe he has some built up fecal matter in the lower abdomen. The drain was placed in the middle of the intestine, so everything above it came out. What about the stuff underneath it though? The doctor tonight said that she is probably going to order a lower gi, or do a barium enema to see if there is poop, or a stricture. Then if it is okay, maybe do an upper gi study, then decide about food. They could still start feeding, and have a big issue. There still could be a stricture somewhere, so we are not out of the woods yet by any means. Craig did his hands on tonight because I was with Brady. He said all went well. He weighed 2 lbs 2 oz.
                                                                  Morning mom
                                                                                 I like my side
                                                            His signature dramatic pose
                                                                      shhhhhh, I'm going to sleep
                                                                    Out for the night

Brady
Brady is down to 20 on his vent setting. He is getting closer each day to a CPAP. The CPAP is scary in a few different ways. I told him that his nurse said that the mask is better because it means he is improving, but that if he has it on, we can't style his hair anymore. I let him know it was his decision to make, haha. Tonight, his nurse gave him a mohawk, and he looked cool. He had a bed change tonight, so I was able to snuggle with him again. This time we were able to get a longer video. His weight was 2lbs 4 oz. He is up to 6.3 ml of food. he is going to get big! His doctor has not seen either of them in a week, and she said she couldn't believe how much they changed in a week. She said she is happy with the improvement.
                                                                   Mohawk!
                                                                         I like it in here
                                                                            Love my little Brady

Hanging out with my mom, getting a back rub.

That's all from the hospital tonight. Hopefully I will be able to cuddle Patrick soon. Craig still has not held them yet, he has been letting me do it.  Best hubby ever! Let's hope that we have some good news for Patrick's belly. Lord knows he needs some good news!
Night
Em, Craig and the boys

They say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger...

What they don't say is that it can also make you;
1. Feel like you are going to have a heart attack
2. Make you cry for long periods of time
3. Make you want to vomit numerous times on the NICU floor

First, I am sorry about last nights post. I don't know what happened. Let's say lack of sleep and an emotional breakdown may or may not have cause a computer malfunction. I apologize to all.  Monday night, well Sunday night also was a rough one for us. Let's start with Sunday. Some of you may have noticed that Sunday's post was a little shorter than normal. That's because I could barely get through it. We received some crappy news about our little Patrick on Sunday night.  Get some Kleenex, this may be bad.

Patrick
So, when I said they had their brain scans and they looked better, and that the bleeds were resolving, I wasn't lying. However, the doctor told us that they found some other things on his. There are two forms of matter in your brain. there is grey matter, and white matter. The white matter controls your motor functions. They told us that they found some small cysts on his occipital region of his white matter, in the back of his head. They said that this can lead to motor skill issues down the road, and it could lead to Cerebral Palsy. The doctor said that it is called PVL. I would love to give you a link on it, but I was to much of a mess to look into it. Please forgive me. He said that PVL does not equal Cerebral Palsy, but if it became worse it could. The reason we didn't tell anyone on Sunday was because we didn't have a lot of information on it. we wanted to wait and  go in the next day to see the doctor, where er had time to really sit down with him and ask a shit ton of questions. Sorry for the swearing. We went in Monday to find out about PVL. The doctor said that when there is space in your body that doesn't have something there, or has something that died, it fill the area with fluid like cysts. At some point, Patrick's brain had an area that had a lack of oxygen to it, and cysts formed. Th places where the cysts are have died. Those areas will never come back. Now, we don't know when this happened. It could have been during the last few weeks of pregnancy when there was cord compression in his cord, or when he had the belly infection. The infection pulled a lot of blood into it and may have pulled some from the brain. They have been doing ultrasounds from  the start to check for bleeding, but they don't check for PVL until around 1 month of age. Could it have been there the whole time, sure, could it have showed up last week? Maybe, we will never know. what we do know is that he said that there is a huge range of symptoms that he can have. It could be something so small like a finger tick. It could be something so small that you don't even know it. On the other hand, if it develops more, which he said usually it doesn't, it could be so sever that he could be in a wheelchair, unable to hold his head up. Here is more swearing, prepare yourself. I ask you this, can't this kid get a fucking break already, I mean come the fuck on?!!? I must have been a wicked nasty person in my past life, and karma is punishing my kids. Deep breath moving on. He said that normally it does not spread, but a few more can pop up. He also said that they are small, which is good, praise the lord.  He said that we won't even be able to see the signs, if any until he starts to develop in a few months after leaving, or as long as 4-5 years later. Has anyone seen the Everybody Loves Raymond episode, where Jeffrey and Michael cut paper? If you have, you know what I am talking about. If not, I will get into later, or try to find a video. Anyway, he said on the positive side, he has two things going for him. First, he said, and he said he is not just saying this because he likes us, he said we seem like excellent parents. We are there every night doing hands on, and talking to him, and moving them. He said that is great, because it provides stimulation for him. He said the other thing, is that he has Brady. He said Brady is going to challenge him. He said he is going to see him walking, and playing, and he is not going to want to be left behind, which will make him work harder. He said that is extra stimulation for him, which is great. He said that because they are preemies, they will need extra help/rehab anyway, he just might need more.  Long story short, after a major breakdown, I am fine now. Haha. trust me when I say, I will do whatever I have to do to help my child get through this Curse you stupid roller coaster of hell (fists clenched pumping them in the air!!) We will beat you!!!!!! We will get through this!! I debated even telling everyone about this, because I don't want everyone to feel sorry for him or treat him differently. The nurse said she doesn't even tell the other nurses because then they treat them differently, when there is no reason too. He is still Patrick, no matter what, does everyone hear that?! Good, cause I will crack skulls if anyone doesn't get it .No, for realsie. On to the good. His Fentanyl is down to 0.5, yeah baby. He had an x-ray of his belly and  there was still some gas in it, so the surgeon chickened out (per the doctor) and said hold off feedings for 48 hours. I am fine with that. He is up to 2 lbs 1 oz. Yeah!!! He is still getting his IV food.
Daddy checking my temp
                                                                                 Holding my daddy's hand
I love my dad

Brady
Brady is hanging in there. His vent setting was being turned down to 25. He seemed to be doing well on his O2. The nurse said that id he continues to do well, he might be on the CPAP soon, which is the O2 mask. He is up to 5.8 ml of milk/formula. They had to start giving him formula since I am not producing enough. They switch it back and forth as I get it. They also have started saving some for Patrick for when he starts to eat. We did hands on again, and managed to miss a poopy diaper again.  I don't know how we keep missing it!  The biggest news of the night was that we were able to do kangaroo care!!! Yea!!! First time skin to skin contact with Brady! They say it so good for babies to be able to sit with the parents and snuggle, but they said it is even better for preemies. They said it really helps their development. This was great. He was so warm, and his little skin is so soft!
My little Brady tucked in tight
                                                                                 Snug like a bug
Can't wait to have two of them in there!

So, that was the night. Some bad, some good.  Some things we can't change, we just wait and see what happens, and pray until our knees bleed. In the end, all that we know is that we have more love for them then we know what to do with, and we will fight as hard as we can for anything that they need.

Thanks for checking in with us! Keep your good thoughts coming! Pray hard!
Love you all!

Bath day

Good evening all.  Tonight was a quiet night with the boys. They were well behaved tonight, and didn't fight that much during hands on time.

Patrick
Patrick was quiet today. He was very red again when we got there, but it turns out he was just hot.  After he was cooled off, he looked nice and calm. He is getting Lasix still. His Fentanyl dose is 1 ml.  They have decided not to feed him tonight. He had a little bit of gas in his bowels, so just to be safe, they are going to wait for 48 hours. Better safe than sorry, and we agree with that. His oxygen was 28 when we got there, and his nurse was going to try to get him down to room air. He was at 900grams, but we forgot to look at what that was in pounds.   He was flipped onto his belly tonight, and pretty much after that, it was nothing but good sleep.
                                                                               Quiet in comfy
                                                                                     Trying to sneak a peek
                                                                                       Comfy and cozy

Brady
Brady did well tonight also.  He had his eyes open checking us out when we got there. We did a little bath time tonight. He is going to have his bed changed tomorrow, so his nurse didn't want to stress him out all at once tomorrow. He is not really a fan of his bath, but he does love a good hair wash, which is funny.   His O2 was down tonight, and the setting on the vent was at 25.  His feeding is up to 5.8. He weighed 2.2 pounds.
                                                                        After bath time
                                                                              Getting sleepy
                                                                                   and I'm out.....

They both had head scans tonight. The brain bleeds look like they are resolving, which is good news.
Alright kids. I am off to bed.
Have a good day everyone.

Sticky Sunday

Morning to everyone. Hope you are having a good morning. Mine has been..well..whatever. My body has decided that it doesn't need to give the boys any food anymore. Can we give me any more stress today? Sure, lets add that to the list.  Just in time too, because Patrick might start his feeds tomorrow if all goes well. Two boys needing food, and we have a empty well. Awesome, just awesome. Moving on...

 Patrick
Patrick was quiet tonight. He seemed nice and snugly in his little bed. Craig did his diaper change, and I did the face cleaning, and lotion. Tried to fix his hair tonight. Had to comb it forward again because the front half is thin. I am calling the hairstyle "The Costanza." His Fentanyl is at 1 tonight. I forgot to look at his O2 settings, and Craig is sleeping so I can't ask him. I think it was at a normal setting. He was 1 lb 15 I think tonight. He did get Lasix tonight, and he will get 3 more treatments. He is getting a ultrasound tomorrow to check his swelling. The doctor said during rounds tonight that his fontanel seemed a little large.  They haven't mentioned that before, so I was like what? He needs more problems, right? Hopefully his scan will come back with some better news tomorrow. He is also getting a chest/abdomen x-ray. If the x-ray is clear, they will start feedings.  I am praying for good results on all of his tests.

How cute is that little noggin?
       Sleeping during diaper change
     Flexing for my nurse!
Brady
Brady is doing okay also. he is still getting his 5 ml/hr feeds. They have turned down his vent settings, and he is taking some breaths on his own. he did not want his tube in to night and he was very annoyed. When we started to do his hands on, we tried to flip him over. He had some sticky residue on his cheek from when they replaced his tube tape. His face was stuck to the blanket, and his nurse had to peel it off. He was not happy. He did alright though, until daddy had to pull some tape off his armpit. If he didn't have a tube in, he would have cried. They are going to turn down his vent again tonight if his blood gases are okay. he will also get a brain scan tomorrow. He weighed 2 pounds tonight, I believe. He is off all of his extra meds. His nurse said we might be able to start kangaroo care, which is where me and Craig can actually hold them to our skin. I have been waiting for this day forever. I can't wait to hold my little Patrick too.  Did you ever see that one picture of a friend or family member that just had a baby. It's that picture of them looking into their babies face with such love and affection, that you just can feel the emotion in it.  I am desperate for that moment. It never once passed through my mind during my pregnancy that I wouldn't be able to touch our children, or not be able to hold them. If you are reading this and you have children, go hug them...right now..it's okay, I'll wait for you to come back. I can only imagine that it is the best feeling in the world.  I am hoping that will be us soon.

Good night all. I am desperate for some sleep...
